“You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mt 14:31)
Peter sets out toward Jesus on the water. As long as he looks at the Lord, he is capable of what seems humanly impossible. But when his gaze is not fixed on Christ, but occupied with the storm, fear is born in him – and he begins to sink.
How familiar this is! Often we also set out bravely. We believe, we pray, we hope. Then comes an unexpected difficulty, a disappointment, an uncertain situation, and suddenly we see the waves as bigger than God.
However, Jesus does not let Peter sink. He immediately stretches out his hand. Only then does He ask: “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” This is not to shame the weak person, but an invitation to trust.
Faith does not mean that the sea around us is always calm. Faith means that even in the storm we know whom to look at.
Perhaps today our task is just this: to take our eyes off the waves and look again at Christ.
