“Be just and compassionate!” – this is the encouragement from the Book of Wisdom.
Truth and compassion are not catchy slogans, but virtues that manifest in everyday life. We know people whom we instinctively call real people. Not because they are believers or members of a church, but because they are honest, trustworthy, merciful, and able to stand up for others.
However, the Christian person is invited to even more. Faith is not merely a religious affiliation, but a life whose fruit should be greater humanity. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes we expect more understanding, more mercy, more justice precisely from believers – and yet we are disappointed. This is a warning to all of us.
It seems that humanity is increasingly disappearing from the world. It is easier to judge than to listen. It is easier to hurt than to lift up. It is easier to seek our own interest than the good of others.
The message of the Book of Wisdom is still timely today: let us be just and compassionate. Because faith is authentic only if it is also shown in humanity. And perhaps today the world needs this the most: not loud people, but real people.
