The world often celebrates great deeds. Those that are spectacular, talked about, and worthy of recognition. However, Jesus measures by a different standard.

He does not speak of palaces. Not of great donations. Not of heroic deeds. He speaks of a single cup of fresh water.

Something that almost anyone can give. A small act of kindness. A helping hand. A kind word. A listening presence.

In the kingdom of God, love is not measured by the greatness of the deed, but by the heart from which it flows. Often it is precisely those small gestures that heal, which perhaps no one remembers the next day. A bowl of food. A package of non-perishable groceries. A hygiene product. An offered piece of clothing. An encouraging sentence.

Jesus says: these will not be lost. God sees them. He keeps count of them. And even the smallest gift given out of love will not go unrewarded.

That is why charity is important for the Northern Catholic Church. Because we believe that mercy heals. And sometimes a single cup of water is worth more than a long speech.

Lord, grant that we may notice those in need of help, and not withhold from them that “cup of fresh water” which we can give out of love. Amen.
